Tetanus
It occurs anywhere in the world and is caused by neurotoxins produced by bacteria in wounds contaminated with dirt, faeces and saliva. Deep wounds, burns and those with dead tissue are susceptible.
Symptoms include muscle rigidity and painful spasms often starting in the neck and jaw. When severe it can cause respiratory failure leading to death.
Vaccination is the only preventative method.
In view of the worlwide prevelance of tetanus all travelers ought to have an up to date tetanus vaccination as it is potentially life threatening.
A booster dose is required every 10 years.
