Rabies

It is an acute, usually fatal disease causing inflammation of the brain and spinal cord which is caused by a virus which is transmitted in the saliva of infected animals – usually dogs (domestic and wild).

Symptoms include headache, fever, confusion, hypersalivation, fear of water (hydrophobia)and hallucinations. Death usually occurs within days of the onset of symptoms.

Extensive outdoor exposure in rural areas eg bicycling, camping and hiking increases ones risk.

Vaccination is the only preventative method.

It is crucial to seek medical attention within 24 hours if you are bitten by a dog especially in an endemic area. There is no effective treatment for rabies once  clinical symptoms have developed.
