Hepatitis A
It is an infection of the liver caused by a virus aquired by direct contact with an infected person or by consuming contaminated food or drinking water.
Symptoms can be mild or very severe and can last a couple of months. Symptoms include fever, myalgia, nausea and/or vomiting, abdominal pain and jaundice.Those travelling to rural areas, trekking in back country areas or eating and drinking in places with poor sanitation are at most risk. Hepatitis occurs worldwide.
There is no specific treatment. Vaccination is the only preventative method. The vaccine is highly effective in giving immediate protection and a booster vaccine within 6 months provides lifetime protection.
