Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
It is important to identify the traveler at risk for the development of a DVT so that the necessary advise and possible prophylaxis can be given before travel.
Risk factors for developing DVTs
- Previous history of DVT
- Cardiac failure
- History of smoking
- Varicose veins
- Obesity
- Over 60 years old
- Women on Hormone replacement treatment (HRT) or the Oral contracptive pill (OCP)
- Immobile patients
- Recent major surgery
- Patients undergoing Cancer treatment
- Pregnancy
