Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

It is important to identify the traveler at risk for the development of a DVT so that the necessary advise and possible prophylaxis can be given before travel.

Risk factors for developing DVTs

  • Previous history of DVT
  • Cardiac failure
  • History of smoking
  • Varicose veins 
  • Obesity
  • Over 60 years old
  • Women on Hormone replacement treatment (HRT) or the Oral contracptive pill (OCP)
  • Immobile patients 
  • Recent major surgery
  • Patients undergoing Cancer treatment
  • Pregnancy
